Marius and Cosette in Wonderland

“Marius?”

“Yes?”

“Ah — where are we?”

Marius looked around the strange landscape. Then back at Cosette. Then back at the landscape. His eyebrow twitched slightly, and he held Cosette’s hand a bit more tightly than necessary.

Cosette didn’t need the force of Marius’s grip to know he was probably even more unnerved than she was.

“Maybe we’re…dreaming?”

“Oh, clearly!” Marius visibly relaxed. Cosette suspected that the idea hadn’t occurred to him. Marius had no intention of admitting it hadn’t.

There was a movement in the distance, a small figure emerging from the field of eight foot tall flowers. At least, clearly that’s what it must have done. Because surely it hadn’t materialized. Then again, this was a dream, right?

Cosette and Marius both stared as the figure, now clearly a cat, floated closer to them. Floated.

“Marius, it’s coming towards us.”

“Yes it is.”

“It’s looking at us.”

Marius swallowed.

“A pleasure to meet you,” The cat said (the cat was talking oh god) to them. Then he grinned. Nothing ought to be able to grin quite like that. Marius and Cosette’s eyes widened in perfect sync.

“Erm. He-hello? I. I suppose?” Cosette said stumblingly, frozen in place and clutching at Marius’s hand, her open-eyed gaze never wavering.

“I suppose it is indeed,” replied the cat, grinning even more widely.

“We’re dreaming.” Marius suddenly blurted.

“If the dream is a translation of waking life, waking life is also a translation of the dream.” Eerie grin never wavering, the cat tilted his head. “That fellow was rather enjoyable.”

“Well.” Marius reasoned, finally turning back to Cosette. His eyes remained comically wide. The expression on Cosette’s face was a near perfect mirror. “Surely it can’t go much further? If it’s only a dream?”

The voice (the voice why did it have a voice?) of the cat caused them both to start.

“Generally speaking,” it said, it’s grin widening impossibly, it’s eyes looking slightly manic. (how does a cat have manic eyes?) ”Things have gone about as far as they can possibly go, when things have gotten about as bad as they can reasonably get.”

Marius and Cosette gripped each other’s hand hard enough to bruise, staring at each other in terror.

Just a dream, right?

Tabula Rasa Amissa (bad working title) - Going Clean

This is from a story with a huge ensemble, set in college. This exceprt features two characters, two of my favorites, named Grant and Elijah. Grant is a big partier, a lush, a bit of a stoner, and occasional party drug user. Even he can sometimes see when it turns into a problem. Elijah is very serious, dedicated, and generally doesn't think highly of the party type. They're both part of a social justice club, the context for his scene is that Grant left some things in the room after the meeting was over, looked really ill the whole time, and Elijah volunteered to bring him his stuff.

Please note I have no idea what is like to be on drugs, addicted to anything, or going through withdrawal outside of what I've gathered from researching it on the internet, so accuracy may be low.

Excerpt - Grantaire Character Perspective

The following is actually an excerpt from a longer story I'm writing about Grantaire and Enjolras of Les Miserables, based on a combination of the book and two particular stagings of the musical. It is in fact going to be a slash fanfiction. This is intended as the opening, to establish my interpretation of Grantaire's character as extrapolated and expanded upon from the three above mentioned versions.

Excerpt - Convergent Paths

As usual, this is a completely un-edited first draft. Constructive criticism encouraged, latant insults not so much.

Convergent Paths is a fairly stereotypical high fantasy story that features the complicated adventures of a series of characters with complicated stories and secrets and back stories who effectively become an adventuring party.

Excerpt - Demarche

Please note that constructive criticism is highly encouraged, but insults and flaming will be deleted.

The following is an excerpt from an unfinished, potentially novel length story with the working title Demarche. The story centers on the two protagonists, Matt and Jonas, from their high school years to early twenties. This is scene is the first time they meet.
